Install Percona Server for MySQL 8.0 using downloaded DEB packages¶

When installing packages manually, you must provide all the dependencies. The bundle does not contain all of them:

The percona-server-server package depends on percona-telemetry-agent. This package is not in the bundle or in the distribution repositories, so you must download it separately (see step 3).
The other dependencies, such as libaio1, libmecab2, libnuma1, libatomic1, and zlib1g-dev (required by the development package), come from the distribution repositories. Install the downloaded packages with apt (see step 4), which installs these dependencies automatically.

Download the packages from Percona Product Downloads . If needed, Instructions for the Percona Product Download are available.

The following example uses Wget to download the Percona Server 8.0 bundle from the specified URL. The bundle is a tar archive containing the Percona Server 8.0.31-23 binary for Debian Buster (x86_64 architecture):

The command line instruction uses the tar command to extract files from a tarball (a type of compressed file). The tar command is a Unix utility that stores and extracts files from an archive file known as a tarfile.

The xvf option combines three separate options: x, v, and f.

x extract the files from the archive
v verbose - print the file names as they are extracted
f file - use the following argument as the name of the archive file

The following command extracts the contents of the Percona-Server-8.0.31-23-r71449379-buster-x86_64-bundle.tar file and prints the file names.

$ tar xvf Percona-Server-8.0.31-23-r71449379-buster-x86_64-bundle.tar

Download the percona-telemetry-agent package for your distribution into the same directory. The following example downloads the package for Debian 12 (bookworm). For another distribution, replace bookworm with its codename.

Install Percona Server for MySQL with apt. The installation requires either root or the sudo command. sudo allows you to run programs with the security privileges of another user, usually as the superuser.

Unlike dpkg -i, apt installs the missing dependencies from the distribution repositories. With dpkg -i *.deb, packages fail with dependency problems - leaving unconfigured errors.

The ./*.deb is a wildcard that matches any file in the current directory that ends with the .deb extension. The ./ prefix tells apt to install local files instead of packages from a repository.

Warning

If you already ran dpkg -i *.deb and it failed with dependency errors, check the plan before you accept apt --fix-broken install (apt -f install). That command can remove percona-server-server and the packages that depend on it, instead of installing the missing dependencies.
